How a Home Exercise Program Could Improve Your Health
It’s common knowledge that a sedentary lifestyle ups the risk of many diseases. But did you know that it’s now considered more dangerous than smoking?
In fact, many experts all over the world agree that sitting is the new smoking. Is this true? Let’s get the facts straight.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chronic ailments such as heart disease have now surpassed infectious diseases when it comes to mortality rate.
American researchers confirm in a 2012 study that lack of activity is the top cause of chronic diseases, reducing significantly not only one’s number of years but also one’s quality of life.
Several other studies echo these results, indicating the importance of exercise in living a full and happy life. Obviously, the best way to resolve this is to get moving. But what if you can’t get yourself to go to the gym to work out? It’s a good idea to consider exercising at home.

Benefits of working out at home
Home exercise actually offers plenty advantages. For one, it’s free.
Unless you’re planning to invest on high-end gym equipment, it won’t set you back for much. It’s also more convenient as you don’t have to travel far. You’ll get to save money, time and effort if you choose to work out at home.
Of course, it’s not without drawbacks. Home exercise requires more discipline on your part. If you’re not enrolled in any workout class, there’s the tendency to slack off and skip your exercise program. To make your home exercise program a success, here are some points that you should always keep in mind:
This is the most important thing to remember about your home exercise program: it has to be consistent.
If you can’t exercise daily because of work or any other reason, you have to formulate a program that fits your schedule. For example, you can plan to exercise three times a week, or every other day. Just make sure that you can stick to the plan, and not end up procrastinating about exercising.
Formulate an effective exercise program
According to a survey conducted by The American Council on Exercise (ACE), the three best ways to get fit include:
- Doing strength training of at least 20 minutes a day two times per week
- Doing interval training that involves two types of exercise (e.g. 30 minutes walking alternate with 20 minutes running)
- Doing 60 minutes of low to moderate aerobic exercises such as running, dancing, jogging, walking, and so on
Set goals that you can follow
One of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to exercise is setting unrealistic goals.
If you’ve been living a sedentary lifestyle for the past five years, you can’t expect your body to immediately cope with a rigorous workout of three hours a day. You have to give your body a chance to adjust.
Your workout program should complement your current fitness and health condition so it’s always best to start with small but achievable goals. Gradually, you can add more time, distance or intensity to your exercise program.
Do something that you love
As with any other thing in life, it’s easier to succeed if you choose to do the type of exercise that you’d actually enjoy. Do you love to dance? Zumba fitness videos should be part of your routine. Do you obsess about keeping the house spic and span all the time? Scrubbing the floors and doing all those chores will give you the physical activity that your body needs. Are you into video games? Invest on video games that will get you on feet.
Workout with a buddy
There’s a bigger chance for you to succeed in your workout routine if there’s another person to do it with. How’s that so? That other person will motivate you in times when you’re tempted to skip out exercise.
That other person will inspire you to reach your goals. And of course, you should do the same for your workout buddy. It’s important, however, to choose the right workout buddy. Pick someone who will be an inspiration to you, and not someone who’ll hold you back.
It takes a lot of discipline and effort to achieve success in your home exercise program. But once you do, you’ll know that all your efforts are worth it. Choose a routine that matches with your lifestyle and metabolism. Eat right, consider supplementation (starflower oil has been known to be one of the best), and exercise.
